Mercy House and Discovery Science Center chosen to receive the highly-sought after Neighborhood Builder award for Orange County, Calif.

IRVINE, CA, November 04, 2011 /Financial PR News/ -- Mercy House today announced that it has been selected as a Neighborhood Builder, part of Bank of America's national philanthropic recognition program that provides $200,000 to high impact nonprofits. Every year, through it's Neighborhood Excellence Initiative, Bank of America selects two outstanding nonprofit/charitable organizations in 45 markets to benefit from the Neighborhood Builders Program. Also selected for the two-year funding in Orange County was the Discovery Science Center.

As a Neighborhood Builder, Mercy House will also receive specially designed leadership development programs including senior executive workshops to develop strategy and growth, as well as emerging leaders workshops for organizational management skills.

"We are extremely grateful to Bank of America for stepping up and recognizing the importance of nurturing the communities in which we live," said Larry Haynes, executive director, Mercy House. " Especially during times like this, when more people are relying on local programs and services, it is imperative that nonprofit organizations have the means to operate to support those in need. We are deeply appreciative of the recognition, and honored to accept the Neighborhood Builders award along with our co-recipient, the amazing Discovery Science Center."

"Mercy House has distinguished itself by providing its unique system of dignified housing alternatives, programs and supportive services that contribute so greatly to our community," said Allen Staff, Orange County market president, Bank of America. "To help them continue with their outstanding work and ongoing quest to end homelessness, we are pleased to award Mercy House $200,000 of unrestricted operating support over two years."
